Plants use nectar to attract omnivores, like ants, for defense (left). To the left, an ant drinks from an extrafloral nectary. Ants defend their nectar resource from harm, including herbivores that would damage the plant. In many cases the ants crave protein after nectar-feeding, and hunt voraciously for prey items, which are often the herbivores of the host plant (right).
